Key Leadership Programs (2)

Virgin Australia's Ground Operations Leaders

Building leadership skills from the ground up is an area I am extremely passionate about. These were two great projects to sink my teeth in to during my first year at Virgin Australia, and set a standard for how we build leadership across Ground Operations.

Culture Conversation Series

QBuild and Dept. Energy and Public Works

The Culture Conversation Series is an interactive learning series that uses Rise and Storyline to support  leaders and learners to engage in some tough conversation about our culture.

OCA App eLearning modules

QBuild Regional and Delivery Teams

One of the challenges I love about new systems is finding the best way to deliver information to users, in a way that makes sense for them, but is also engaging and purpose driven.   The  OCA App eLearning modules definitely fit the bill here.

FEATURED PROJECT 1a:

The MyPath program

Virgin Australia - Ground Operations

The purpose of this project was to build online learning resources to support the implementation of a custom built Power-app for crew leaders to quickly and easily enter feedback and performance updates.

This program was delivered while also working on other programs including Human Factors (Non-Technical Skills), My Path, Facilitation skills and teaching team members how to use Storyline.

FEATURED PROJECT 1b:

The Leadership Legacy program

Virgin Australia - Ground Operations

  • Leadership Legacy Program

The purpose of this project was to build leadership skills for our front-line leaders across the network, with a key question in mind "You are at the beginning of your career as a leader, but 20 years from now, what you want people to remember about you as a leader?".  The focus was to build these leadership skills in the early days, instead of having to unlearn and retrain bad habits after years in leadership.

This program was delivered while also working on several other programs including Human Factors (Non-Technical Skills), My Path, Facilitation skills and upskilling team members in how to use Storyline.

  • Winner of the 'That's Champion' Award

This project was recognised across Ground Operations, and was chosen by the General Manager from  14 nominated projects Australia-wide.

  • Project features

Challenges: Limited design software available, complex 24/7 operation, upskill of lstaff to deliver

Design Software: Canva, SharePoint, and MS Office.  Choice of basic design software was purposeful to make use of tools familiar to those delivering .

Delivery: Program and session guides, Handouts,  takeaway tools, monthly tasks and tips,  coaching and preparation for mid-senior leaders who would  deliver the program to front-line leaders.

Featured Project 2:

Culture Conversation Series

QBuild, Dept Energy & Public Works

This design project had to communicate to executive leaders, office staff and Tradespersons - all in the one eLearning piece, and the aim was to get Tradespersons talking about culture. Challenging? YES! but this project got across the line, AND won the Minister's Excellence Award for 'Healthy and Safe Workplace' in 2021.

This project was requested in response to the staff survey, where key culture issues were tailored into an interactive online learning resource designed to encourage conversations at both a one-on-one and team level. The program was rolled out on a monthly basis over 7 months.

I worked closely with the Communications and Legal teams to produce an easy to use module in Articulate Rise (with Storyline elements) including downloadable tools and resources which could be to support Managers to have conversations with individual team members, but was also used as a talking point at monthly Toolbox talks.

  • Winner of the Ministers 'Excellence Award 2021' for Healthy and Safe Workforce

This project was recognised by the honourable Mick de Brenni MP, Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen and Minister for Public Works and Procurement, and received the DEPW Excellence Award in 2021 in the 'Healthy and Safe Workforce' category. The program was also earmarked for roll-out across other government departments.

  • Project features

Challenges: Messaging had to be relatable to all staff, from tradespersons to executives, and had to encourage conversations (which were sometimes sensitive) in an environment where 'toughness' is traditionally perceived as the norm.

Design Software: Articulate Storyline, Rise, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Word.

Delivery: Program and session guides, Handouts, Takeaway tools, Coaching of mid-level leaders to deliver the program to front-line leaders.

Featured Project 3:

The OCA App eLearning

QBuild Regional and Delivery Team

QBuild worked with Noggin (Developer) to deliver a customised version of the OCA App which is used to record site assessments, and is particularly useful when no internet is available in a disaster event.

I developed an eLearning series which allowed learners to access different modules whether they would be using OCA on their mobile or PC, and also incorporated variations for iPhones versus Android users.  Storyline was used to  create interactions where the modules look and act exactly like the app.  This meant that the learner can learn by doing, and complete at their own pace, while being supported by a range of resources if they need them.

  • Project features

Challenges: Incorporating variations to customise the learner experience based on how they will view the app, and what specific functions they will use.

Design Software: Articulate Storyline, internal LMS, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams.

Delivery: eLearning series delivered via the LMS, support resources such as User Guides and QRGs on a SharePoint page, and a Microsoft Teams page and chat to support implementation.
